Sometimes I think it would be much better for my peace of mind, energy levels, and general social relations if I were to refrain from participating in discussion groups/forums and simply compile a set of well-reasoned, not-too-ranty essays on assorted topics.

I can't think of any offhand for comics, which may be just as well since my most cohesive collections are of X-Factor and LSH stuff, and I haven't gotten around to reading all of either. Well, wait....

Weird Things about Legacy (which would require more research)
Clones Are Real People (Or As Close To It As Their Templates, Who May Be Fictional)

For HP, topics that come to mind would include:
There Is No New Ginny
JKR IS Planning Slytherin House Redemption (In Multiple Senses)
The Boa Is Really Cool (...wait, nobody argues with me about that one; also, limited source material)
The Sorting Hat Makes Sense
Hufflepuff Is Formidable

For YW... um... hmm. Alan, do I have any YW rants? (Should I?) I've developed a rather strange urge to defend Ronan, given that I only started liking A Wizard Abroad when I reread it after some more had come out, but I'm not sure it makes for much of a rant.

Speaking of your second HP rant, did you see http://www.jkrowling.com 's new information on Theodore Nott??

:D "This is a character I know much more about..." I'm hoping (as is my best friend, author of a number of WIPs surrounding Theo) that this is because she's going to have him be the first Good Slytherin Harry runs into... *crosses fingers* because she's got plenty of not-nice slytherins and plenty of not-noice purebloods.. so, there's a gap. it must be filled!!

She has good ones; it's the "nice" that's missing. ;) And Phineas was fun even if he was irritating... and does anybody who complains about Harry being biased against Slytherins ever THINK about the fact that he's imagining Phineas awfully sympathetically...? *plaintively*

But yeah, I figured the stuff about Nott was a fairly definite sign she hasn't written them all off....

Oh, Phineas, of course. He was neat.
.... but apart from him, are there "good slytherins," apart from Snape (and Harry's opinions of him suffer from this), Salazar and any of the adults whose houses we don't know???

Hope so, personally.

I'm sure they exist in theory; we haven't been introduced to very many, but heck, we only know a handful of Ravenclaws. Harry is as bad about identifying his classmates as I am, and that's saying something. ;) You're quite right that Nott looks very promising; I think I failed to mention I agreed with you there.

True. Which I find very frustrating... there are 80 people in my form, I know them all by name, and I speak to them regularly. How hard can it be for Harry??

*nods* Yepyepyep.

Well... I've had classes where I never figured out who more than a handful of the people were, so.

Wait, wait, I thought "The Sorting Hat Makes Sense" was MY rant-topic of choice!

Of course it makes sense... who's claiming it doesn't? *blinkblink*

Well, a great many people seem to be openly puzzled, or to have decided that it's arbitrary or genetically deterministic or actually just lets the student pick with no consideration of anything else.

You know, I always wanted to find out what happened to the boa constrictor. Did he make it to Brazil?

I'd like to know that too. It seems as if it would have been difficult, although it also seems as if he'd have trouble surviving the winters. Possibly he got recaptured, I suppose. Or he might have found a way to hide out in somebody's basement.

Alan and I have an AU in which he survived a couple of winters and eventually made his way to Hogsmeade, where he disturbed people by writing requests for Harry with his tail in the dirt.

hmm. I don't remember any YW ranting or near-ranting, but that may just be my memory at fault. Maybe it just isn't a big enough fandom to have hit critical mass of annoyance?

Maybe. And operating on an author-owned site might have something to do with it, too. (Well... I actually talk to people about it off the site more than on, but they're all among the higher echelons of sense. You, Frito, my brother... oh, NM got through SYW and likes it! She pegged the Tolkien-like Power structure at once, finds the describing-things-correctly notion of magic appealing, and says she can't get the baby helicopters out of her head.)

*pauses to try to imagine having some of the HP fandom exchanges when she KNEW JKR might be watching*

Dear heavens.

Heh. Yeah, it's harder to be a twit when the author might very well call you on it.

I thought the baby helicopters were probably disturbingly cute, myself, as long as you didn't look too closely at what they were eating.

Of course, if you ask the Hog's Head's dear Morgan D., if JKR goes onto fansites, she's the guest and should be playing by their rules and it's troubling if she goes criticizing preferences or identifications or behaviors or interpretations. At least, as far as I can tell.

Well, not once one stops to think about it.... ;)

Or in Draco's case when one gets hexed into next month, I suppose.
