Mar. 15th, 2003 04:43 amSomeone explain to me....
If a group of people make a habit of putting others down and even make a community to do so, how is it "the pot calling the kettle black" to call them on the fact that they're being obnoxious?
Where does someone who goes about dismissing other people as "plebes" get off telling someone else to get over themselves?
Why do some of the self-styled "patricians" seem to be so frequently unable or unwilling to express themselves without cursing?
Why do the stories and tastes the above are so proud of seem to be inadequate to feed their egos without borrowing terms to assist them in looking down on those with different tastes?
How on earth does one conclude that calling a group a "clique" implies considering them either elite or powerful? I was under the impression that connotations frequently included the suggestion that the group members considered themselves better than everyone else for no substantial reason and engaged in rather pointless politics of popularity. In other words... they only have any power if you care.
Why do people use 133t when they are supposedly trying to communicate to a general audience? I can, as it happens, see the appeal as a sort of mindgame, to some degree... of course, this dates back to having a lot of fun looking at digital clocks upside down as a child, so perhaps it isn't the best example.
What am I missing with regard to the Neopets Gadgadsbogen clues?
Why do I have the perverse urge to prove to someone that her favorite pairing can be poorly written? I'm sure she was exaggerating when she said it couldn't....

Date: 2003-03-15 07:43 pm (UTC)As a history major I would even go into the historical meaning of plebian, but I won't. Because I know better.
But the problem is that people have a tendency to have a inflated value of self worth in order to protect fragile egos.
But Let us simply revel in our coolness.

Date: 2003-03-16 05:41 pm (UTC)A single stick can be broken, but a bundle of sticks cannot crack under the severest of pressure. The bundle (the fasces) was the symbol of Roma, and the plebian class. Learn from it, people! (just not like Mussolini did, ok?)

Independence is good. But so is having friends who will say sensible things when you need to hear them. Thanks.

*thinks about this* You know, maybe I shouldn't bother complaining. Unfounded egotism is annoying but could be given the apathy it probably really deserves, and their insult... isn't much good as an insult, considering.
Probably still healthy to challenge now and again anyway, though.

Date: 2003-03-15 10:15 pm (UTC)Fabulous post.
I was going to add a bit more to the thread, but you said all there is to say.

Date: 2003-03-20 05:16 pm (UTC)As a "self styled patrician", I would like to inform you that I can express myself quite well without using expletives. Of course, they do help. :)

Date: 2003-03-21 08:26 am (UTC)Well, that's good to know.
Of course, they do help. :)
Personally, I tend to associate them with a lack of manners, vocabulary, and/or self-restraint, but hey, if that's what somebody wants to express.... ;) No, seriously, that's an older attitude; I've seen and heard too many people swear who do evince a decent vocabulary (in both senses) under other circumstances. (Besides, I've been known to go completely inarticulate under circumstances when many people would probably curse. I don't think I said a word about going over the handlebars of my bicycle until somebody drove by and asked if I felt all right.)
Now I guess I'm more likely to think that a lot of profanity means the speaker doesn't consider their audience worth using better communications skills. Strangely, that also seems to describe most of the people I see kicked out of chatrooms for persistent netspeak.
