Things I detest about fandom
Feb. 14th, 2003 02:38 pmThe attitude that in order for a piece of feedback or a review to be worthwhile, one must find something wrong with the story.
Watching people fawn all over someone who obviously despises them, apparently without noticing they're taking essentially the position of the character they look down on in their favorite imbalanced 'ship.
And in other news, I finally tried updating "Who We Are" at the Sugar Quill and apparently muddled up my own filenames, as what's actually there is chapter 2 of "Worth a Thousand Words." I suppose it can be considered a sneak preview until I can get it fixed, and it's not as if anyone who really wanted to read the rest of either story couldn't find it elsewhere. Decidedly embarrassed now.

Date: 2003-02-14 01:50 pm (UTC)I hear ya on that one. When I read a lot of times, I read for enjoyment. I don't read to pick things apart. If something really does jump out at me even through that, I'll gently bring it up.
But otherwise, unless I'm actively Beta-ing, I don't sweat the small stuff. I go for the overall impression. Am I enjoying this? Am I being entertained? Do I want to keep reading? If the answer's yes, I try to let the author know.
I know everyone can always have room for improvement and learning, even published authors. I'm always glad to be constructively informed of a typo, glitch, or some other problem in my writing, so I can fix it. But at the same time, the most important thing to me is -- "Did you enjoy it? Was it worth your time? Were you entertained?"
That's the main objective I have in reading and writing -- be it published or fanfic. I do it for pleasure, and I want to be entertained.

Date: 2003-02-24 07:33 am (UTC)I don't know about ignoring private messages; sometimes this means they're really absent-minded or fell asleep without logging off. ;) Showing up on a thread and sneering at everyone on it while they jump up and down and squeal about your story being THE one to read for their ship is... something else. Ah well.
