I'm beginning to think I should get a dream icon. Maybe something really psychedelic.

Last night, I seemed to be stuck in backstory. Or something. At least, part of the dream seemed to be the idea that the dream was somehow expanding on a previous dream, which I don't actually remember having. At least part of the dream was actual flashback -- the dream-characters triggered a replay showing past events. This may explain why I can't work out the continuity, so I'm stuck with a few different images.

I think there was something before this, but I don't recall what. There were people in this strange building -- I think it was very old, and they were exploring it. It may have been on a beach. There was sand on the floor, and there were a lot of largeish jars sitting around with weird objects suspended in them. Some seemed to be a kind of three-branch tube structure -- one up, two down, coming out of a central point. Other weird things, some in jars... also a lot of pieces of fabric, mostly folded into quarters. "We" couldn't figure out what these things were for the longest time, though at another level, as an observer, I could kind of tell.

Then this one guy unfolded a piece of fabric while holding it up to his own front, and it became obvious to all that it was... a pair of shorts.

For some reason, this made it abruptly obvious to everybody that all those objects in jars were body parts, though they still looked just as weird and stylized. Everyone hurried out of the building onto the beach in alarm.

Next(ish) a couple of kids, I think a boy and a girl, were standing outside what was supposed to be the same building, a low wooden thing with windows and a counter inside with bar stools, and then another set of stools in a part of the building closer to the street, off to the left side from the recessed door. The door was locked, but they were messing around with it; there was another section of the restaurant-looking part of the building protruding on their right, and it had a bulky contraption up hanging from the ceiling with switches and knobs and colored lights and swively things. I have no idea how, but the kid investigators were affecting this -- but not in a controlled way. One of the swivel things turned to "look" at them when they got its attention, and they tried to hide behind a wooden wall instead of a glass one. I think it might have fired at them, and they were afraid it would shoot its way out of the building.

Then it started replaying some previous events for them. The bad guys were inside the building, and they had the big fat kid from school -- though I think he was more kind of stocky -- I got the idea that the kids watching didn't like him, but felt compelled to rescue him. I have conflicting impressions on whether he was a bully or the one everybody picked on. His hands were tied, and he was sitting on one of the stools with no table or bar near it. He was scared.

He was probably right to be, because not only was he in there with the bad guys and the weird contraption, but the bad guys were trying to control the building and not doing a very good job of it. The building wanted oxygen, and it turned out it could move -- it bent and got out into the street and attacked an oxygen truck. The bad guys all flinched when part of the building crashed into part of the truck, but it was up near the front (cab? part without oxygen?) and there wasn't an explosion.

Then, bafflingly, the building was apparently up in the air or on a mountainside, dangling the truck from multiple points. Maybe with cranes. The cab was swinging around wildly, and more wildly still was swinging -- from what, I'm not sure -- some boy on a bike. I think he was the kid who'd been captured, but I'm not really sure; he looked more like the other guy. Anyway, at one point he swung into the cab (through the window!) and the trucker (who was alive, despite the building having crunched into his cab) tried to help him, but I think the boy was too panicked and got out again.

And... I really have no idea. It was a very vivid dream but making sense, not so much.

And so it's ridiculously late and I'm going to bed now. Maybe I'll have another interesting dream.

Clearly, you need to hire your subconscious a continuity editor.

Cable! *dissolves in giggles*

...Actually, maybe I hired him and that's the problem.

Look, if the Ashkanison himself is boggling at your dream's continuity, you need someone to keep it straight. Just make sure it's no one from Marvel.

Do you ever have these story-dreams, and get woken up at some (seemingly) crucial point and think--

Ack! No! No! I want to find out what happens!--?

Yes!

Though I think more often I've opened my eyes to try to see the dream better, which of course doesn't work, and actually sometimes managed to shut them and start again.

V. annoying.

Maybe in heaven, there's a dream library, where you can catch up on all the storylines one has missed.
