Jul. 23rd, 2006 03:19 amI feel vaguely worried that one of my fic ideas is implausible. I think the solution to this is probably sleep, followed by being generally responsible, followed by writing stuff anyway. I think it's somewhat more uncomfortable having the plausibility of an idea questioned when I'm not sure whether I believe in it myself or just think it would be fun than when that question is settled in my own mind, in which case I'm prepared to either argue or agree cheerfully -- but the idea is persistent enough that I think I'll hang onto it. Whether it's the one I'll write or not is another question.
I had another dream that I suspect of having been interesting, but I no longer know what it was. I think I should make a list of the ones I remember; it might be fun. Well, some of it would be fun. Sadly but predictably, a lot of the ones I recall more vividly were nightmares, although some are not and some that were nightmares when I was in them became kind of funny upon waking or after a longer period of time. Like the one with the swimming pool and alligator in a tulip tree.
I think I might try a little indoor or balcony gardening. I was lured over to a display of seed packets on clearance (which I suppose may mean they're less viable by now, but at ten cents apiece...) the other day. Upon considering that I had no suitable containers -- little pots for single houseplants, but that was it -- I looked at the gardening containers and was generally unimpressed with the appearance, shape, sturdiness, or price (or all three) of most of them. So I went over and found some inexpensive storage containers. They are not decorative, though as my mother-in-law pointed out, a moss lining or even just nice dirt will probably look pretty good through clear plastic. But they come in a convenient variety of sizes, cost a lot less, and have lids that can be used as drip trays after I cut some drainage holes. (Drainage holes and drip trays were noticeably lacking in a lot of the plant containers. I suspect they were meant to be façade type things to put something more practical inside.)
And until then I've got a couple of extra boxes.
Cool husband moment: This was actually a couple weeks ago by now, but I didn't post about it then. One weekend, a couple of annoying food-related things had happened. I'd absentmindedly left out a container of clam dip all night after using up the last of my clams in it, which was disappointing, and in the course of frying chicken had had what seemed an excessive amount of oil splatter. We wiped up, of course, but I knew the floor should really be properly mopped and was grumpy about it.
So when I got home lateish Monday night, I discovered that my husband had gotten groceries -- including replacement clams -- and mopped the kitchen floor.

Date: 2006-07-23 07:36 pm (UTC)(I'm not complaining that he put it there, mind. It's the best place to put it while it's wet, and actually I have a tendency to forget and leave it there until next time it's needed. We don't have a lot of overnight guests.)

Date: 2006-07-23 06:59 pm (UTC)I love the idea about the pots and flowers and balconies. What sorts of flowers did you get? Also: "nice dirt?" You're very cute and strange sometimes. ;) They'll look cool, though, you're right.
Aww, what a nice husband you have. ^^

Date: 2006-07-23 07:30 pm (UTC)Aww, thanks. :) I've actually sort of noticed that an awful lot of my fics -- even (especially?) the ones I'm fond of -- sound downright odd in summary. It depends on how convincingly it can be written or justified, and whether it finds a reader who's willing to give it a shot.
But actually the one I'm worried about is the Scout/Whie one, and the problem may be less whether I have a justification than whether I can communicate it. I think the story belongs in Scout's POV -- there are a few things I'm tempted to swap out for, but I have a feeling that's not the best way to go. Whie will talk to her, although I'll have to tread carefully to develop the choices they make while they're in captivity and can potentially be observed. Vader's the one whose behavior the most people are likely to question, and at the same time the one whose thought processes are least accessible. *pause* Well, it seems natural to me that Vader would be inclined to go for the idea of a couple of Jedi Padawans claiming to want to jump ship and get married, and that if he only half believes them or figures they wouldn't have gone through with it without the Purge, he might respond to this by performing the wedding to make sure they go through with it. But this started out more as amusement and 'this would be fun and feels sort of right so I can maybe get away with it' than as the result of logically analyzing the characters, and is likely to strike at least some of my readers as strange. *g*
I shall take it as a challenge.
Although it's really tempting to have an out-of-Scout-POV scene where Vader has to explain this to the Emperor.
I am also glad to have learned when I did that Vader ended up having a castle/fortress thing on Vjun. I figure this isn't a storybreaker -- he sent them there, it's not like he didn't know where they were, they'll just have to be more careful -- but it does seem like something that the story should acknowledge!

Well, you know, some dirt looks better than other dirt. ;)
And, um... actually I'm trying to see if getting them ultra-fresh will improve my vegetable intake. ;) I got broccoli, carrots, chives, parsley, and... um... kohl rabi. Which I had never heard of before, but is supposedly mild, sweet, and funny-looking.
