Wizardry has always allowed extra latitude for whimsy. There is a mostly discredited tale that Slytherin's objections to Muggle ancestry began when the parent of one of his own students sneered at the elaborate games of magical hide and seek that "passed for training" at the school.
The Hogwarts Four made a habit of trying to outdo each other with secret passages and architectural tricks. As anyone who has been to Hogwarts can attest, when fully activated these would be formidable indeed.
Slytherin made one brief return to Hogwarts to discredit rumors of his loss or death among the traps.
