Meme! Because I like talking about my fics....

Contracted from all sorts of people....

If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my fics, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular line, why I chose that characterisation, what I was listening to as I wrote, what crack I was taking and where you can get some... anything. Anything you might like to know about how I wrote a fic, I shall do my best to answer.

Special PK edit: And if I don't know, I shall ask the relevant cowriter.

I'll also try to do better with this than I did with the fic commentary meme. I still owe somebody or other commentary on "Tapestry of Fire," I think, and possibly on a scene or two of "Tea Leaves."

Okay...why Proteus? Not the most common character for your first fic. ;)

He grabbed my brain!

As I think I've mentioned before, I hadn't ever really planned to join in the writing of fanfic. Still, I'd always tended to dream up alternate endings (or *cough* try to imagine myself or a representative into stories... or, perhaps more interestingly, wish I could imagine the whole story very thoroughly from the point of view of each character) and so on, and apparently hanging around #subcafe affected my mindset.

I had gotten interested in the Muir Island set -- well, Rahne and Moira, largely; I'm not sure how much I knew about Excalibur. Some of this was identification with or admiration for things other than actual personality -- Rahne being a teenage Christian girl, Moira being a genius scientist, both being Scottish (which I'm not, but a fair number of ancestors on both sides of the family were) -- oh, and I grew up cheering for a university whose mascot was the Wolfpack. ;) I enjoyed reading X-Factor while PAD had it, too, at least for a while. (Actually, those were my introduction to Rahne -- I hadn't seen much of New Mutants. Go figure.)

And then, the Proteus story fascinated me -- you know me, there's the whole lost potential thing. ...Um, and he was cute, in human form, in the one panel I saw of him as a teen/adult (not sure). Granted that part was rather disturbing, as I think it was his corpse.

Anyway, it wasn't that I decided my first fanfic should be about Proteus so much as that the first idea I decided I really had to write was about him. I really liked the notion of playing with the idea his powers could do that -- which may or may not be reasonable given some people's speculation about line-of-sight, but I don't think anybody complained -- and yeah, I knew that curing Legacy and bringing characters (especially Illyana) back from the dead were cliches, but I figured this was an adequately different way. And the imagery -- "twirling, caressing flames that dance in the heart of a newborn star," and a general mental picture of dazzling light-strands and swirls and fire shot through black -- really got to me. I still remember sitting in the computer lab typing the whole thing up rather urgently into a Yahoo mail draft.

Where are you going with the "Stepbrothers" fics, and do you have any plans to stop?

Why Ernie's great-aunt?

What do you think Stepbrothers Tom would do if there was a pure-blood movement similar to the Death Eaters in his lifetime? (only obviously less effective without Voldemort to lead it.)

[identity profile] rexlapinii.livejournal.com 2004-11-20 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to do with the Stepbrothers fics except that I tend to get them a day or so early, but I always like to imagine Canon Ernie's face, after all that CoS freakout over the Heir of Slytherin, finding out that in an alternate universe his great-aunt is married to one. :)

Yessssssssssssssssssssssss. :)

Where are you going with the "Stepbrothers" fics, and do you have any plans to stop?

I'm not sure that first one is a fair question; do you really want me to spoil the whole thing? ;) Then again, the answer to the second is that we haven't actually written any of it in a while -- we've got one more fic to catch up to at the Quill, and all we've got is posted at FA and ff.net. (Actually, I haven't finished much of anything in a while. Sigh.) It's not so much that we planned to stop as that we know a fair amount of what happens later, but haven't worked any of it into a story of its own yet. We might get there eventually.

Eh, let's see. Tom is, to your great shock I'm sure, going to grow up and marry Moira. We are saving Rubeus for one Olympe Maxime, because we are sentimental and don't see any reason the changes preclude their meeting. ;) Rubeus will finish school and acquire the position of Care of Magical Creatures professor rather sooner than in canon. He will also, having investigated things rather more thoroughly in this timeline, develop a thriving trade not in the Untradeable Acromantula eggs, but in hiring out live young Acromantulae who speak intelligently, are involved in negotiating their own contracts, and are quite pleased to take on the guarding duties for which their species was originally bred if their masters/employers provide a suitable den and plenty of juicy food. After all, too dense a population of spiders in an area where the food can defend itself is rather likely to turn to cannibalism.

Tom is going to head Slytherin House and teach Defense Against the Dark Arts, and will purchase a second wand when Ollivander notifies him that the brother to his own has been sold. Between natural (cultivated) charm, power, and the cachet of being the Heir, he's rather popular, although there will always be somebody who grumbles about the other side of his family. Under his leadership, Slytherin certainly has a lot of pride but can't really get as isolated as it seems to be in canon (for a number of reasons); there is also rather strong encouragement in the idea that it is more productive to get on with people and/or get them to adore you than to turn up your nose and antagonize them, if at all possible. He may eventually retire from schoolteaching for a stint in politics.

By the time Harry arrives at Hogwarts, Snape will be long gone and happily (okay, grouchily) ensconced in a research lab somewhere. Peter Pettigrew will be teaching potions.

Why Ernie's great-aunt?

We thought it would be funny. Picture canon Ernie MacMillan's likely reaction to finding out that in another Might-Have-Been, his alternate calls Voldemort's alternate Uncle.

Head it off at the pass if he could manage it -- he does, after all, have a certain amount of influence over a number of the children of families who might be most likely to be inclined to such a thing. Assuming it actually got going... I think he'd try to counter it by speaking on it publicly (with Salazar's basilisk at his side) and getting those of his students and... allies... who were amenable to help put it down if it came up in general conversation.

Of course... he'd probably be at the top of their hit list.

*Blinks* That was...more than I thought I'd get. All good. :D

Tom is going to head Slytherin House and teach Defense Against the Dark Arts

Funny. I always saw him as teaching Arithmancy, for unknown reasons, but DADA works even better. Heading Slytherin House was a given. Imagine how much Draco Malfoy must loathe and abhor it.

One of my nice recurring daydreams is imagining various people's reactions if Stepbrothers-Tom accidentally ended up in the canon universe. It usually has people asking me suspiciously what I'm grinning at.

I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but this series is my favourite AU, just because...well, everything, really.

Hadn't thought of Arithmancy. I imagine he could, but... well, we figured a nice stable DADA teacher would be suitable. *g*

Not sure what Draco thinks. He might well abhor the whole thing if Lucius and Narcissa both proved resistant to Tom's charms, though, which is possible. ;)

Oh, cool, it's not just us!

And actually, we once wrote the start of a tale where Harry and Rubeus both got switched -- so far we'd only done bits in the Stepbrothers side of things, in which canon-Harry and canon-Rubeus had just been greatly disturbed by Tom (who was pretty disturbed himself at his brother and one of his students accusing him of being a psychopath, actually)... oh, and then they called Harry's parents in.

And then I was going to grab Drea to see what you said and hit send before this part. *rolls eyes at self*

I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but this series is my favourite AU, just because...well, everything, really.

Thank you so much! That and the grin-inducing daydreams made my day, I think. :)

*beams* Aww, thanks! You sure made my day. :)

As PK said, we have some terribly amusing daydreams ourselves of canon characters switching out. Harry is rather freaked out by the arrival of his parents, and gets admonished not to call his Potions professor "Wormtail" while at school. *g*

You should so write that story. :D

[identity profile] dreagoddess.livejournal.com 2004-11-21 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
That part IS written, though it's one of the random bits we just wrote in chat to amuse ourselves. ;) Of course, some things that start that way end up posted, like Swamprat, so who knows?
