Well, in all honesty, I'm pretty sure it ends up getting taken personally in purely academic situations too. People get attached to their positions (and with predictions, there's a chance of your position or opposing predictions actually being confirmed or refuted), people's worldviews influence both their interpretation AND their predictions... and with HP, at least, you have both the differences in what people expect to happen and the differences in what people think ought to happen, which are not always the same thing.
