I've always been uncomfortably wedged between the TEXT OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN people, who are understanding about leaving Sirius dead but don't like anyone taking liberties with the things that were just barely covered in the books, and the people who appreciate a good crackfic, who are fine with ridiculous obscure characters coming into play but want to know where the sex went. I'd contemplated what I was going to do if any of my characters became wholly AU, and I think I figured that I'd just put a note on the fic saying that I'd had the plotbunny prior to DH, and it was still a good plotbunny, so why not write it?
(I may actually do this with a few plotbunnies requiring all-out war during the second war, but right now more canonical bunnies have precedence.)
Personally, I still read fics written before books that were already out, and as long as you warn for it nobody should really get upset. I think there's a huge difference between saying "I had the idea for this/I started writing this before Book Whatever was out," or "This could have happened in Book Whatever and they just didn't bother to tell us," and saying "Okay, everything happened in Book Whatever, except this one huge plot point that would unravel everything!"
And I still want to know who Teddy was raised by, because she totally left that out. Now I have this bizarre image of him having been raised by Malfoys of some description. Unlikely, but amusing.
