JKR's website update

Spoiler-warning-ed rumor debunking:

Oh, thank goodness. I thought there were problems with the idea, but wasn't sure enough, and I really didn't like that idea when I came up with it. It's nice to know.

Also, this may provide some clues as to what is and is not considered by the author to be essential to the story... although I'm sure many had already reached a similar conclusion. ;)

Whoo, what a Christmas present! That was worrying me!

*is suddenly tempted to edit icon to add "(and NOT a Horcrux!)"...*

Me too.

(You'd think I'd have better things to worry about, too. Oh no, I didn't care that I was going to fail all of my classes, no, no, it was ONOES THE FOUNDERS ARE EVIL!)

...Oh, I was worried that Voldemort had somehow gotten hold of it, not so much that the Founders had made themselves a joint Horcrux. But destroying it would have been sad.

*giggles*

Ah, good. I'd had my doubts about that theory from the beginning.

Well, so did I; if I'd thought it was a sure thing (even without liking the idea), I'd be stunned and bewildered as well as relieved. ;)

The explanation made me laugh out loud. But Dumbledore could have said that in the book (and it would have been a good line for him), rather than just not mentioning the hat at all and leaving us wondering.

It would have been a good line for him, wouldn't it? I have the feeling the Sorting Hat actually didn't occur to JKR as being a target for suspicion, or Dumbledore would have dismissed it as a possibility along with the sword. (Although then we'd probably still have had people wondering if it were a Founder-Horcrux anyway, or if that was Dumbledore's mistake....)
