(no subject)

*yawn* Somebody compared Godric/Rowena to H/Hr again, this time on the "Why is it always Rowena/Salazar?" thread over on FA.

I wonder if I'd get in trouble for saying, "Well, I see what you mean -- I realize romance and attraction weren't so much of a priority in marriage back then. I prefer to think of the Godric/Rowena pairing as having a little more spark, though."

Probably. Bah.

[identity profile] wabbitseason.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
*blinks* Thread please? Nice to see I'm in the minority... as usual.

[identity profile] karet.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Probably. *g* I shouldn't be surpised at the source of that comment. I'm waiting for them to start making the next natural comparison. Ron as Salazar, the evil git, and Luna as his loyal Helga, supporting him in spite of it all.

Congrats on being in the Neopian Times twice, btw (:

And for the person above me;
Founders are...

Why am I even surprised that there's Foundershipping?

I think Rowena was a nun.

Mind, Andrea pointed out that she's actually seen more stories with Helga/Salazar, Rowena/Godric and/or Founder/OC pairings. I think this probably reflects some sample bias; I strongly suspect that the Godric-Rowena-Salazar and Harry-Hermione-Draco love triangles in Cassie Claire's stuff have led to a lot of paralleling.

Hmm. Just for the heck of it, I'd like to know if there's a story out there that runs the correspondence Godric-Rowena-Salazar to Ron-Hermione-Harry, instead. I'm not sure whether it would be any good or not -- if it's somebody who considers Godric and Ron to be misogynistic buffoons, then no -- but it would have potential. Might work with that Fixing the Mistakes of Your Intergenerational Parallels theme.

Though it neglects Helga, which isn't good.

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 07:34 am (UTC)(link)
Never mind that if you're going to parallel Ron and Harry to the Founderboys, it's far more logical to make Ron Godric and Harry Salazar. (Actually, maybe that's what I should say....)

...For that matter, Luna actually being, y'know, IN Ravenclaw and Hermione being an obsessively hard worker....

Why am I even surprised that there's Foundershipping?

As Alan once pointed out, if you started a Godric/Madame Maxine thread over there, by the end of the day you'd have two people mildly interested, two who didn't quite see it or had never thought of it before (no, really?) but would give it a shot, and at least one who'd shipped it forever and was thrilled to finally find kindred spirits.

...We haven't tried this, but we did inspire Kaesa (whose Godric is extremely tall due, I think, to some sort of magical accident I'm not clear on yet, in case you don't know) to write a fascinating fragment of whimsical time-travel fic in which Godric and Madame Maxine... ended up quarreling, actually, and Salazar was subtly interrogating Draco (but unfortunately didn't have a chance to pass on the results before getting yanked back to his own time).

Moon and Stone has intra-Founder shipping, which Andrea and I usually don't write, but it felt right for that set.

I think Rowena was a nun.

Quite possibly; I can see the arguments for it, though I do not necessarily use it. ;) Chibi_Squirt is quite passionate about Helga being one, too.

P.S. Thank you! Technically the Poetry Competition, not the Times. But one of their writing competitions, so close enough! ...Well, except I'm actually supposed to get more than just a trophy for the poetry. They haven't updated that yet though. Then again they didn't update the news at all yesterday. Oops?

[identity profile] wabbitseason.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
Helga is always overlooked, isn't she? *sighs* I need to rethink that other founder story.

Interesting you say that, because I didn't see the H/Hr parallel at all for G/R. Courage/book smarts can describe R/Hr just as well. I think the thread can be summed as "People see them as they want to" which seems especially true of the Founders.

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
She isn't as flashy... supposedly.

Courage/book smarts can describe R/Hr just as well.

Of course. But catch an H/Hr shipper admitting Ron has a good quality... well, that's not fair. Some of them do.

I think the thread can be summed as "People see them as they want to" which seems especially true of the Founders.

True enough. I have to confess to it myself, of course, and also to getting rather perverse about contradicting some versions I don't care for.

Well, my personal set-up (not used for anything except a Sorting song, so far) is that Godric was the youngest, barely an adult when they started the school. Helga was an elderly widow who'd raised a houseful of children and had been Godric's tutor as a child in matters of magic, particularly Herbology and "practical magic". Rowena was a nun of indeterminate age who took care of the "book-learning" aspect of education. Salazar was part of the invading enemy force, their enfant terrible, about eight years older than Godric. Because Salazar was being used against his will as a child, he was allowed to live and went off to the fens, and little Godric, much to his guardians' annoyance, would visit him. When Godric came of age with his wacky idea for a school, he wanted his old teachers Helga and Rowena, and argued passionately to include Slytherin as well. (After all, the Sorting hat goes on about how Slytherin and Gryffindor were friends, as were Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.) Thinking of them as at totally different phases of life--not something I ever thought about exactly; it's just how they came to me--is probably why the shipping never occurred to me! It would be like shipping Harry/Molly.

(If that's shipped, I don't want to know about it.)

Still, should have known.

[identity profile] karet.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
I like it!

It would be like shipping Harry/Molly.

Ewwww! I bet someone, somewhere does (although many of the people I like to call "weird shippers" don't really like Molly so...), and I too don't ever want to know for sure.

[identity profile] karet.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! I should have re-read it. For some reason I thought "Times" and didn't check.

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I have... way too many sets of Founders in my head. Some of them are all approximately the same age, some it's hard to tell, and in one of them Helga was Rowena's and Godric's daughter and Salazar was very loosely inspired by/adapted from Gavroche in Les Miserables. (I'm not sure that one's workable after OotP, though I kind of liked my starting fragment.)

I'll be interested in seeing it if you ever decide to do more with your set....

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen Harry/Molly, I think, but not so much actual shipping as writing it just to be... well... you know.

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I was talking about submitting to the Neopian Times earlier. Not sure if I'll actually get around to it or not. I still only have two scenes.

[identity profile] fernwithy.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'd start a thread just to see if there were any takers, but man, it would squick me too much to actually know.

[identity profile] karet.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
*shuffles cards* I'll trade you two evil Salazars and a Helga as Rowena's daughter for a Helga as Rowena's servant, Godric as a monk, or a Rowena that's a time-traveled Hermione. (;

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
But I don't want any evil Salazars!

Some other Founder, on Rowena as time-traveled Hermione:

"She sprang fully grown out of the air. We try not to think about it too hard."

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
...I'm half surprised to find that according to the master ship list, there isn't one already.

There are however... you know, I'll be nice.

Though the Salazar/Hermione one actually holds some interest for me. Or could, if done well. (Does it count as promising that the last post before it went dormant rejected the idea that they'd nickname each other?)

[identity profile] karet.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:45 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! *OMG! shE iz LYK 4 godSes!*

"Out of all the schools, in all the (flat)world, she had to time-travel into ours."

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! *OMG! shE iz LYK 4 godSes!*

Okay, I know spelling was somewhat flexible back then but that is going a little far. ;)

"Out of all the schools, in all the (flat)world, she had to time-travel into ours."

Hey, Helga liked her, remember? :) (Oh. Of course Helga would like workaholic Hermione Rowena. Got it. :))

[identity profile] fernwithy.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I think I'm just going to go over to fanficrants and do yet another anti-shipping rant.

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
Should I hide?

[identity profile] fernwithy.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. It just turned into a general sort of "Why do people invest themselves in stuff that's going to be self-evidently contradicted?" rant.

[identity profile] kaesa.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 10:25 am (UTC)(link)
::facepalm:: Godric/Rowena could be any fanon ship, really, with what little information we have... well, except for Crabbe/Goyle, maybe. Why are people so compelled to compare pastfic ships to canon-era ships, anyway? The two canon equivalents (as far as I can tell) for my!Godric and my!Rowena are Neville and probably some sort of Snape-Hermione-McGonagall-Umbridge-something, and I don't ship any of those characters...

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
some sort of Snape-Hermione-McGonagall-Umbridge-something

Thank you, I'm scared now.

[identity profile] kaesa.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not Umbridge, I suppose... no, not really Umbridge. She's not a Harry Potter character, really, she's more a mixture of several real peoples' worst qualities plus a Kaesan attempt at snark.

[identity profile] rexlapinii.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
I still prefer Helga the Viking to . . . just about anything, really, though. Especially with all that detail you found about Skarthaborg. :)

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
We need to get back to that. I think I could tweak the Animagus conversation without too much trouble, really....

[identity profile] rexlapinii.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
We've got the prologue just about done, don't we?

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
I believe we do, yes.

There is something about a 40K prologue....

[identity profile] dreagoddess.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor Helga. But we don't overlook her in OUR story. *eyebats innocently* Kore and I are good. Go read us. *g*

[identity profile] kazaera.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the reason I've long since abandoned the ships. They're just *insane*.
Is there a Regulus/Sirius one yet? Last time I checked, there wasn't. And that one is at least more plausible than time-travel... and c'mon, if you're going to ship Dobby/Hagrid or The Giant Squid/ANYBODY, what's a little incest?
(Salazar/Hermione? Hmm... there's probably a lot of Salazar/Tom... what about Salazar/Harry?
...it's contagious. Argh!)

[identity profile] persephone-kore.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'd prefer time travel to incest, frankly. Though there are plenty of incestuous ones up there.

[identity profile] kazaera.livejournal.com 2004-05-06 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point... incest being a rather squicky subject. I think I prefer time-travel too (except when it results in Snape/Hermione, Remus/Hermione, Sirius/Hermione, Sirius/Harry or any of those... ack!) although in certain cases, properly treated incest can be extremely angstily poignant.
