I still think your theory about choices is a good one. Maybe she's saying it's easier to go the bad route -- maybe Riddle did have some virtue but ignored it, and maybe Harry could go bad if he let his anger take over.

There's also the theory that Harry was loved for at least a year, and Riddle never even had that, and that's what makes the essential difference between them.
