Erm, wait a minute....
No spoilers, just references to JKR-interviews and speculation.
I was thinking about my expectations for the sixth Harry Potter book. It occurred to me that I was expecting Riddle-backstory pretty strongly (didn't JKR say that was coming up soon?), was convinced of Founder-backstory for reasons I can't quite pin down, and found the theory fairly plausible that the almost-used-before chapter might depict Voldemort's attack at Godric's Hollow.
At this point I was forced to stop and ask myself whether I was expecting there to be room for anything about Harry's actual sixth year. :)

You reckon she'd start with a flashback chapter? I'm doubtful - didn't JKR say that the chapter was originally going in CoS? But CoS was more about wizarding world history - the personal history came out more in PoA. Though I guess that could be what she changed.
I just cant see how she'd work it structurally. Oh well, only another 5 days before I'm proved wrong! ;)

Well, hopefully the action will be more integrated into the school this time, rather than Harry find out everything through newspapers, dreams, Sirius etc. That way we might get Year 6 information that didn't feel an add-on to the plot arc.

I said I found that one plausible, not that it was a strong prediction -- but no, actually I think what she said was that she almost used this first chapter in PS, PoA, and OotP. *checks* Yes, that was it. Well, pretty much. It might not have been going to be first in PoA or OotP. http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/extrastuff_view.cfm?id=6
I'd agree that the Godric's Hollow attack wouldn't seem like very probable almost-material for CoS. :)
Anyway, I don't know how she'd do it, but it seems possible.

Well... I was thinking that Year 6 would be where the actual plot arc was taking place, and laughing at myself for so many of my expectations revolving around backstory that would have to be tacked onto or worked into that.

Plenty of room for digressions, really...

Still, not long to wait now!

Yes.
But a lot of what was going on in Hogwarts in OotP felt rather periphial to me, unless Umbridge has planted something in Hogwarts that will only come to fruition in Books 6 or 7. A lot of the day to day details of the schoolwork and relationships seemed just there to move us through the year while the real action relavant to the wider plot went on elsewhere.
